The hunter success rate for wild turkey hunting is comparable to any state in the nation with a stable flock of 225,000 birds statewide. Kentucky is now home to the largest elk herd east of the Mississippi, with over 6,000 free ranging animals and the number of lottery permits issued for elk hunting continues to increase annually.

Visitors of Lake Cumberland have many recreational opportunities available, including fishing, boating, hunting, and camping to name a few. Lake Cumberland, located in south central Kentucky, near Somerset, was authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1946. Construction of the project, under the supervision of the Corps of Engineers, began in August 1941 and was completed. in 1952 after a three year delay due to World War II. Normal summer elevation of Lake Cumberland is 723 feet above mean sea level. At this level, the shoreline is 1,255 miles in length and the lake comprises some 50,250 surface acres.

Lake Yatesville, Kentucky

Yatesville Lake is a 2,300-acre lake is located in Lawrence County on Blaine Creek, about 18 miles above the mouth. The lake is situated four miles south of Yatesville and about five miles west of Louisa. Access to the lake is by KY 3 and KY 1185. Stocked species includ channel catfish and bluegill as well as largemouth bass. Last year redear sunfish were added along with more bluegill and channel catfish. According to fishery biologist Ed Carroll, the stocking program is doing well, evidenced by the fact that bass stocked in the fall of 1991 are being caught at the 15-inch keeper size. Be aware -- the minimum size limit for largemouth and smallmouth bass on Yatesville lake is 15 inches, not the regular 12-inch statewide size limit.
