April fishing at the Outer Banks will include Striper, Bluefish, Drum or red drum, Sea Trout, Grouper and Snapper, Croaker, King Mackerel, and Wahoo. Speckled seatrout may begin as early as mid-March and continue through late-May or early-June until the summer heats them out. Speckled Trout will pick back up as it cools from mid-September to mid-December and later. This later season is best in NC and a truly fantastic fishery.In North Carolina, April is a big month for lake Largemouth spawning and you find yourself looking for aggressive fish that have not yet spawned yet. This time of year soft plastic baits are often the better baits; also try small spinners. Throw these bait near structure or where fish are bedding. Luckily, when you catch one or two you are likely to catch more of the same.
North Carolina is a fantastic fishery. Some of the gems include:
- Roanoke River for shad and striped bass, Neuse River for shad and catfish, Cape Fear, Tar River, the New River with a fantastic smallmouth bass fishery, plus too many fine trout or panfish rivers to count. Fly fishing largemouth bass is becoming popular.
- Great lake fishing might include:
Falls Lake for largemouth bass and crappie, Lake Norman, Kerr Lake for striped bass, Lake Gaston, High Rock Lake, Lake Norman, Shearon-Harris, Lake Wylie, or Jordan. Also, there are many great smaller lakes. - North Carolinas saltwater fishery is one of the best in the world. You will catch seatrout or drum inshore, Spanish and False Albacore, a great assortment of fish offshore. Tarpon fishing is OK and tarpon destinations includeBald Head Island and the Pamlico Sound.
