Nymph fishing is the most productive of fly fishing for trout. In some months nymphs will be the only producer. Nymph fishing does take more technique and skill than does dry fishing to get the most out trout water. |

Some times of the year nymphs are the only flies that will reliably catch mountain trout. Other time, the nymphs may still be the most productive fly. Popular nymphs are a personal choice and too numerous to mention here. Also, the most productive nymph will change during the year. Check out some of the Eastern and Western hatch charts to help make a selection. Nymph fishing does involve technique and strategy to be most productive. The articles and books below are good to get you started and may benefit the most accomplished wet fisherman. Enjoy nymph fishing. If you find yourself on the water with no identifiable hatch you can use a prospecting fly to help your narrow down. A prospecting fly is usually larger, often brighter, than the hatching fly to help trout notice and recognize a fly as food. Fishing multiple flies on a dropper rig may also improve your odds. When there is no apparent hatch it may be an excellent time to get out the terrestrials. The fly assortments below may help you put together a robust fly collection or it may be time to start tying your own trout flies.
