Wing shooting is a driving cause full of heartbreak. It requires skills and actions to be successfully. Several very successful shotgun instructions have observed that !00% of your concentration is needed on your target to be most successful. This means no concentration on being hot or hungry, none on your gun mount, none on your aching feet, and none on anything else. Here is a short list of things to help improve your wing shooting technique:

Choose a shotgun that best fits you and your needs. I am not just talking about auto vs. O/U and other such esoteric arguments. Gun fit is essential for a fluid mount and mount is required to become truly good at wing-shooting. There are several ways to arrive at a gun that properly fits. First, try as many of your friend's guns as possible. Second, practice mount every gun you can in stores. Third, it may be a good investment to hire a professional to help determine the best fit. Professionals will be common around gunsmith capable stores and many of skeet and sporting clays clubs. A sore shoulder often indicates poor fit and a reputable gunsmith can modify your gun; you may see an immediate improvement in your shooting.

Gauge is also important. Larger gauge usually means more hits and more kick. If kick intimidates you the increased potential may not be worth it.

A proper functioning shotgun will improve your shooting. Make sure the gun is clean and in good working condition. This is required for safety but will improve your shooting. Know your chokes if you have screw in chokes and be able to match them to the hunting conditions. Patterning your shotgun will tell you whether it shoots up or down or possibly left or right.

Knowing your gun will improve success. Practice is the only thing that will help you bag shots. Go to the local sporting clays club and shoot. Practice mounting your gun even when not shooting. Please practice safety.

Prepare for the hunt. At hunt day dress appropriately. Stay warm but do not wear overly bulky clothes .Always watch your boots as poor boots are very distracting; either they cause pain or cold feet hurting your concentration. On hot days keep a couple of bottled waters to keep you cool. Pack in a candy bar to help fight low energy towards the end of day. Keep glasses and possibly a first aid kit with aspirin if you are prone to headache and the such.

Concentrate. Always concentrate on the target -- not on your shotgun. This will make you successful. Prior practice will help you lead.

These things will make you more successful as a wing shooter and will cripple less birds.
